About Kubernetes Certifications

Kubernetes (K8s) is the dominant container orchestration platform, used by 84% of organizations running containers in production (CNCF Annual Survey 2024). The Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) administers three performance-based Kubernetes certifications: CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator), CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer), and CKS (Certified Kubernetes Security Specialist).

Unlike multiple-choice exams, all three are hands-on, performance-based certifications requiring candidates to complete real tasks in a live Kubernetes environment within a time limit. Kubernetes certification holders report 20–30% salary premiums over non-certified cloud engineers (Linux Foundation survey 2024).

All three certifications are administered by the Linux Foundation and CNCF. They are valid for 3 years and widely recognized by Google Cloud, AWS, Azure, and all major enterprise technology employers. CKS is the only certification that requires an active CKA as a prerequisite.

Note on performance-based format: CKA, CKAD, and CKS are hands-on exams — you solve real Kubernetes problems in a live cluster, not answer multiple-choice questions. Cert-Ready's practice content will focus on scenario-based conceptual questions and command-line knowledge to reinforce your understanding of the underlying principles.

Planned Kubernetes Certifications on Cert-Ready

The following CNCF Kubernetes certifications are planned for the Cert-Ready platform.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the CKA certification?
The Certified Kubernetes Administrator (CKA) is a performance-based certification by the CNCF validating skills in Kubernetes cluster administration. The 2-hour exam requires completing 15–20 real tasks in a live Kubernetes cluster. Topics include storage, workloads and scheduling, cluster architecture, services and networking, and troubleshooting. The passing score is 66%.
What is the difference between CKA and CKAD?
CKA (Certified Kubernetes Administrator) focuses on cluster administration — managing nodes, networking, security, and storage. CKAD (Certified Kubernetes Application Developer) focuses on deploying and managing containerized applications — designing pods, services, volumes, and application configurations. CKAD does not require CKA as a prerequisite.
How hard is the Kubernetes CKA exam?
CKA is considered one of the more challenging IT certifications due to its performance-based format. Candidates must complete real Kubernetes tasks under time pressure (2 hours for 15–20 tasks). Most candidates study for 2–4 months. Familiarity with kubectl, YAML manifests, and Linux command line is essential.
Is Kubernetes certification worth it in 2026?
Yes. Kubernetes is the industry standard for container orchestration and demand for K8s skills continues to grow. CKA holders report an average salary of $130,000–$155,000 in the U.S. The certification is recognized by all major cloud providers and is required or strongly preferred for DevOps, SRE, and platform engineering roles.
